The Gods and Goddesses of Tyria
before and after the Searing

Written by Marleen

To write an article about Guild Wars' deities had been long planned, but of course someone else beat me to it. Well then, I took some more time (or a lot more time) and wrote it SoLD-style. Half of it is rumours, speculation and personal preference, so you're free to disagree ;) Here's for you then... the light and dark side of Ascalon's devine figures - in Ascalon BC (Before Charr) and Ascalon AD (After Damage):

Balthazar

Balthazar, the fighter with the flaming sword, is said to be the God of warriors. He symbolizes strength and warfare. The God's statue is covered in flames to demonstrate his power over the elemental domain of Fire.

After the Searing... Balthazar's statue does not quite lie in ruins like the others. It still stands, massive and sturdy, however the fire has been put out.

Dwayna

Dwayna's statue can be found on the grounds of Ashford Abbey - for Dwayna is the Goddess of monks. She provides them with the powers to heal. The parts of the statue are floating, showing clearly that her element is Air.

After the Searing... Ashford Abbey is now more commonly known as Sardelac Sanitarium. You can still see where Dwayna's statue once magically levitated in the air - bits of it lie shattered on the ground.

Two healing spells carry Dwayna's name:
"Dwayna's Kiss" and "Light of Dwayna"

Melandru

The Goddess of rangers symbolizes life and nature. Her statue beautifully incorporates a tree and a spring. Her element is obviously Earth. Animals are keeping close to the site as if they feel protected in the shrine's presence.

After the Searing... nothing's left of Melandru's beautiful shrine. Almost - animals are still roaming these now dry and dead lands, so it seems like even without the shrine, some of Melandru's protective spirit is still about.

Grenth

Grenth is the God of necromancers - his shrine can be found in the catacombs underneath Ashford Abbey. His powers are over the dead and undead, as the poor souls reaching out for him on his statue proove. Grenth's statues and shrines are always close to or inside water, so it can be assumed that Water is his elemental domain.

After the Searing... all entrances to the catacombs are blocked one way or another. There is no way to get into them to see if Grenth's shrine or any of his other statues that could be found down there have survived the war.

Lyssa

The two-faced statue of mesmer Goddess Lyssa displays a balance of illusion and deception. It can be found right at Lady Althea's theater.

After the Searing... Lyssa's statue is still intact, but looks as dead as the others. Althea's theater however has been hit by a chrystal and half sunken into the ground...

The Unknown Deity

It is said that elementalists generally worship the God or Goddess that represents their favoured element, and that they don't have, or don't need, a deity devoted to their profession as a whole.

There is, however, a sixth mural a few steps outside the square where the other five can be found in Ascalon City AD - which displays a dragon.

Two elementalist spells - "Mark of Rodgort" and "Rodgort's Invocation" - give us a hint of what could be this dragon's name.

The Charr Deity

This massive insectoid statue can be found in the northern parts of the Kingdom of Ascalon, behind the Great Northern Wall, to be called "The Breach" after the charr invasion. The Charr set up another on, lit on fire, outside the Nolani Academy.
It might, or might not display a God of the charrs - no one knows for sure...
